Cellphone store break-in: Over MVR 100,000 worth items stolen

The price of the items stolen from the break-in at a cellphone store located on Majeedhee Magu, the main road of Male’ City, has been placed at over MVR 100,000.

The break-in at Xeonmobiles 4 was reported to the police at around 05:35am on Monday. Ahmed Niyaz, 47, Finoroalhi, HA. Maarandhoo, was arrested in connection to the case on the same day.

CCTV footage of the break-in went viral on social media which shows the suspect leaving the shop with bags containing items stolen from the shop.

While Criminal Court has remanded the suspect in custody for 20 days, the court order states that the suspect has a prior criminal record in similar cases.

It further said the suspect is accused of stealing a large number of items from the store while he was in possession of several phones at the time of his arrest. As per the court order, documents submitted by the complainant show that the price of items missing from the store exceeds MVR 100,000.

The Criminal Procedure Act classifies theft involving a monetary value of MVR 100,000 or greater as a felony. Henceforth, the Criminal Court said this case will be reviewed as a felony.

 

As per statistics disclosed by the Police, a total of 3,124 cases related to theft have been reported to the authority so far this year.
