Kulhudhuffushi man jailed after pleading guilty to theft, unlawful entry and property damage

Mohamed Nabeel Ahmed, White‑herd / Kulhudhuffushi City, has been sentenced to more than one year and two months in jail for breaking into a warehouse and boatyard in Kulhudhuffushi and stealing a large number of electrical appliances and tools. The incident occurred on July 8 this year.

Sun previously reported that two suspects were arrested in connection with the theft. Nabeel is the only one who has been convicted so far.

According to the charges against Nabeel, he entered the Discovery boatyard and a warehouse called Ethumaa Hiyythala without permission. A large number of drills, grinders, chain saws, wrench sets and electrical appliances were stolen from the two locations.

Nabeel pleaded guilty to two counts of theft, two counts of knowingly entering an unauthorized place, and one charge of damage to property.

Chief Magistrate Mohamed Ismail sentenced him to seven months and 25 days in jail for the main charge of theft. This sentence is to be served after deducting the 53 days he spent in custody during the investigation.

In addition, he was sentenced to a total of six months and 24 days in jail under the Penal Code for the other four charges convicted in connection with the same incident.

During the trial, Nabeel’s lawyer requested that the sentence be converted to house arrest instead of jail. However, the court ruled that the type of punishment could not be changed as he had been convicted of multiple offences in the same incident.
