Suspect surrenders stolen helmet after police publicize footage

Two young men caught on CCTV stealing a helmet from a parking zone in Hulhumale’ have surrendered it to the police after police publicized footage of the incident and appealed for public assistance in identifying them.

The police had publicized CCTV footage of the incident on Monday, showing two young men on a Suzuki GN motorcycle at the parking lot of an apartment complex in Hulhumale’ Phase II. It caught the man in the passenger seat grabbing a helmet kept on a parked motorcycle as they drove by.

A police spokesperson said on Tuesday that the individual sought by the agency had voluntarily come forwards and handed over the helmet to the police.

The spokesperson added that the investigation into the case remained ongoing, and thanked the public for their assistance.

Theft remains one of the most frequent crimes in the Maldives, with over 2,300 such cases reported so far this year.
