Man sentenced to four months in jail for stealing child's school bag

A man has been sentenced to four months and 24 days in jail for taking a child’s school bag from a parked motorcycle without the owner’s permission.

The sentence was handed down to Nahid Yoosuf, of Gulfaam/L. Isdhoo. He was charged with unauthorized possession of another person’s property.

According to the prosecution, Nahid took a Smiggle-brand school bag from a motorcycle parked in the parking zone near Kalhu Vakaru Miskiy on Chaandhanee Magu, Male’ City, on the evening of 23 July 2025. The bag contained school books, a water bottle and a pencil case.

Nahid pleaded guilty at both the preliminary hearing and the summary sentencing hearing. The judge stated that he confessed voluntarily and without coercion, and found him guilty of the charge.

The basic punishment for this offence is four months and 24 days in jail. Nahid had previously been convicted of similar offences within the past two years, but those sentences had been reduced due to his guilty plea. Therefore, the court sentenced him to four months and 24 days in jail again.

The sentence was delivered by Criminal Court Judge Ali Adam.
