Seafarers urged to be cautious amid strong winds and rough seas

The police have advised seafarers to be cautious amid a rise in incidents at sea as strong winds and rough seas prevail across the country.

In a post on X on Monday, the police said that authorities have been receiving increased reports of incidents at sea amid the current spell of bad weather.

The police advised seafarers to check the latest weather updates and take all necessary precautions before embarking on journeys.

The precautionary measures advised includes:

  • Checking the latest weather updates
  • Ensure all safety measures are in place on vessels
  • Ensure vessels aren’t overloaded
  • Have emergency contact information visible onboard vessels
  • Share the travel manifest with the owner or operator of the vessel

The appeal comes with a yellow alert in place for strong winds for the area from HA. Atoll to ADh. Atoll. According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, the alert is in place from 10:00 am to 02:00 pm on Monday. The weather agency forecasts strong winds of 25-30 miles per hour and gusts of 50 miles per hour with rough seas.

There is also a white alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in place for the area from L. Atoll to Addu City, from 10:00 am to 02:00 pm Monday.
