A Singaporean company has pitched a proposal for developing a Liquified National Gas (LNG)-based power generation network in the Maldives.

Chi Energie Pvt. Ltd presented its proposal to Maldivian Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and other Environment Ministry officials in a meeting on Tuesday.

In a statement regarding the meeting, the Environment Ministry said it believes that an LNG-based power generation network has the potential to revolutionize Maldives’ energy sector and expedite shift towards clean energy sources.

LNG is natural gas that has been supercooled to minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 162 degrees Celsius). At that temperature, natural gas condenses into a liquid, which takes up to 600 times less space than in its gaseous state, making it feasible to transport over long distances.

Reducing reliance on fuel and using renewable energy sources to produce energy is a key goal of the Maldivian administration.

In December last year, the government signed a USD 75 million agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Accelerating Sustainable System Development Using Renewable Energy (ASSURE) project, which aims to boost electricity generation through renewable energy systems.
