Bike sharing scheme to be launched in Hulhumale’ with 100 battery bikes

Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim states preparations have been completed to commence a bike sharing scheme in Hulhumale’ under a project titled ‘Low Emission Transport Project’.

He announced the project while speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Thursday,

In this regard, the Minister described the project as a crucial effort undertaken by the government to reduce the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere.

While the research required to implement the scheme in Hulhumale’ has been completed – Minister Thoriq said funding required to commence the scheme has also been arranged.

According to the Minister, a total of 100 battery bicycles that are charged by solar power will be utilized in this scheme. As such, solar charging stations will be developed in Hulhumale’, he added.

“The scheme is part of efforts by the government to reduce the emission of emission of harmful gases to the atmosphere and reduce the dependency on oil,” Minister Thoriq stressed.

He noted that an agreement will soon be executed with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to procure bicycles.

Bike sharing has successfully been implemented in a number of foreign nations.
