The Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has suspended a senior nurse who is under investigation by the police for alleged drug abuse.

The nurse, identified as a female of Maldivian nationality, was reported to the police by the hospital’s management two weeks back.

In a press statement on Sunday, the IGMH said the nurse is under suspension.

It added that she had previously been serving as the ward in-charge, but was demoted two months back, following a performance appraisal.

The police confirmed the investigation into the case on Saturday. However, they have not made an arrest.

Drug abuse is one of the biggest social issues facing the Maldives. In 2023, the police received reports of 1,750 drug-related offenses. The number stands above 1,010 so far this year.
