Maldives today offers heart care facilities on par with developed countries, said Senior Consultant and Subspecialist in Cardiology Dr Miqdhaadh Shareef, speaking at the 10th anniversary celebrations of the National Cardiac Centre, an event graced this morning by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.

Addressing the ceremony held at Dharumavantha Hospital, Dr Miqdhaadh said the centre has made remarkable progress since its inception, transforming cardiac care in the country within a single decade. He noted that earlier, patients had to wait several days abroad to receive results of essential heart tests, a situation that has now completely changed.

Dr Miqdhaadh said the centre is currently providing many advanced treatments that were previously unavailable in Maldives, describing this as a major step forward for the national health sector. He highlighted that all cardiologists working at the centre today are Maldivians, a milestone he said strengthens public confidence in local specialists.

“I am very proud to say that the cardiologists in this centre are all Maldivians,” he said, adding that the growth of Maldivian expertise has been central to earning the trust of patients who once felt compelled to travel overseas for procedures such as angiograms.

He said the expansion of cardiovascular services in Maldives has brought great convenience to patients and has fundamentally changed the country’s health system. Over the years, the centre has increased the number of patients treated, broadened the range of procedures, and introduced modern equipment and facilities, developments that have significantly reduced the need for overseas referrals.

The National Cardiac Centre was opened on June 5, 2016, during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. At today’s ceremony, the First Lady unveiled the centre’s new name and logo, officially renaming it as the National Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences.
