A man who stole a mobile phone from a residence in Male’ City has been sentenced to three months in prison by the Criminal Court.

Ahmed Nishan, a resident of Hulhumale’, was accused of stealing a Redmi brand mobile phone from a second-floor apartment in Beneenaage, located in the Henveiru district of Male’ City, at around 04:30 am on May 6, 2023. The phone belonged to Hasim, a migrant worker from Bangladesh.

According to the prosecution, Nishan took the phone from inside a pillowcase on Hasim’s bed.

Nishan had initially denied the charge against him, but later confessed to the crime.

The court issued its sentence on Wednesday. The court found Nishan guilty of theft based on his confession, and sentenced him to three months and 18 days in prison. The court treated the 15 days he spent in detention as time served. He therefore has three months and three days left to serve.

Theft and robberies are the most reported crimes, with over 2,200 cases of theft and over 300 cases of muggings reported so far this year.
