Mohamed Abbas, Velidhoo MP, warns the Prosecutor General that he could suffer the same consequences as Governor Hashim.

Abbas, who is also the Deputy President of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), said PG Hussain Shameem was continuously failing to fulfill his duties. He made the statement while debating on the bail amendment bill during Tuesday’s parliament sitting.

The MP said an appointed PG is a public servant, and must be independent of the government, as well as close aides and relatives.

Abbas said the prosecutor general must fulfill his mandated responsibilities, or he will be dismissed by the parliament like the governor.

He also called for an end to indefinite detentions, and said “lack of space in court rooms” cannot be an excuse for stalling trials.

Abbas also criticized the acquittals of criminals where there was enough evidence and testimony, and stressed that the President’s priority is to end indefinite detentions either by a presidential decree or by the PG’s discretion.

In addition, he called for transparent and fair legal enforcement, and opposed discrimination between rich and poor citizens in investigations.

The High Court previously ruled that only suspects on criminal charges were eligible to receive bail.

The issue of indefinite or lengthy detentions of suspects who are ultimately found innocent has been raised by lawmakers. The lawmakers have called for prompt action to ensure such individuals receive justice.

On Monday, parliament approved recommending dismissal of Governor Ali Hashim to the president, citing he was not fulfilling his duties.

President Dr. Muizzu  on Monday, nominated former Finance Minister Ahmed Munavvar’s name for parliament approval to replace Hashim.
