Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has denied the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s allegations that it had dismissed an employee for attending an event of the party.

MDP released a statement on Tuesday, claiming an HDC employee who recited Quran to kick off an event of the party held at Dhandikolhu Jagaha last Thursday night was sacked by the company for attending the event.

Commenting on the allegations, HDC’s Spokesperson Mohamed Siraj said an employee of the company was not dismissed for participating in an MDP event. However, he did not disclose the exact reason behind the employee’s dismissal.

MDP, in their statement, underscored that participation in political activities was a right guaranteed by the constitution and in this trajectory, stressed that any action for exercising that right, or threatening an individual from exercising that right, amounted to a violation of the constitution.

The party also noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during his presidential campaign, pledged that no government employee will face fear over their jobs in light of their political affiliation.

MDP alleged that the government, in contradiction to the pledge, is threatening and dismissing employees who do not support the government.

The party condemned the act in the harshest of terms.
