Authorities seized MVR 47.5 million in drugs over the last one-and-a-half months, according to Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan.

Ihusan, who is accompanying President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in his current visit to Addu City, made the comment on Sunday night, while addressing a gathering for residents of Feydhoo.

Speaking at the gathering, Ihusan said that the war on drugs is a key priority among his duties to ensure domestic security.

‘As such, over the last one-and-a-half months or so, we have prevented MVR 47.5 million in drugs from hitting the streets of Maldives. This is due to the priority the president gives this,” he said.

Ihusan said that there were some 800 people sentenced to undergo rehab when the new administration took office. He said that 300 of them have now begun rehab, and the rest will join the program soon.

Ihusan said that President Muizzu has instructed him to fully eradicate drug addiction over the next five years.

Drugs is one of the biggest issues facing the Maldives, accounting for most of the crimes in the country.
