Fayyaz: Govt has lost public trust; MDP will win supermajority in Parliament

The main opposition MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has expressed confidence the party will win a supermajority in the next parliamentary assembly, adding that the people had lost all confidence in the new PPM-PNC administration.

MDP’s parliamentary candidates, accompanied by top party officials, presented their candidacy forms to the Elections Commission (EC) on Monday morning.

Speaking to reporters outside the elections center in Dharubaaruge, Fayyaz said the party aims to win all the seats it is contesting.

He said that the party expects to win enough seats to meet the supermajority it achieved in the 2019 elections, or maybe even surpass it.

“For whatever reason, the people have lost the hopes and the confidence they had in the newly election administration over the last two months,” he said.

Fayyaz said that the PPM-PNC administration has turned its pledges “upside down”. He said the administration was born out of lies and deception, and that the people were opening their eyes to the truth.

“They hold zero confidence. And there’s great public doubt regarding the administration’s competence,” he said.

Fayyaz, who served as economic minister during the MDP administration, expressed concern over the country’s economic outlook.

“I am very concerned about the government’s financial situation. This wasn’t easy, even back when we were in office,” he said.

MDP, back when it was in power, achieved a historical feat in the 2019 parliamentary elections, by winning a supermajority. But since then, it lost 13 MPs to the Democrats – a breakaway faction of the MDP, and 14 more MPs to the main ruling PNC.

However, the MDP continues to hold a majority in the Parliament with 42 MPs.
