Maldives Meteorological Service has issued orange alert for the southern cities of Addu and Fuvahmulah – warning of possible flooding.

The orange alert is in effect from 01:20 pm to 03:20 pm Wednesday, for the area from Fuvahmulah City to Addu City.

The Meteorological Service said the area will be affected by torrential rain and thunderstorms, with possible flooding.

Meanwhile, there’s a yellow alert in place until 05:00 pm Wednesday for strong winds and very rough seas, for the area from N. Atoll to Dh. Atoll.

The national weather service attributed the bad weather to the onset of the Northeast Monsoon earlier this week.

The service said that strong winds and rough seas are expected mostly in the northern and central atolls, and heavy showers are expected over some parts of the country for the next 72 hours.

Meteorological Service urged everyone to be “very cautious.”
