The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert for heavy rain across a large part of the country, alongside a yellow alert issued later for central atolls.

The white alert is in effect from 9:00 pm to 3:00 am, covering the region from Haa Alifu Atoll in the north to Laamu Atoll in the central Maldives. The Met Office said heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected, with winds between 19-24 mph, and gusts reaching 40 mph in thunderclouds.

A yellow alert was also issued from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, warning of torrential rain and thunderstorms, with gusts of 45 mph. This alert is active from 10:45 pm to 2:45 am.

The forecast for Saturday night is showery, with periods of heavy rain and thundershowers across several parts of the country.

Wind speeds are expected to vary significantly:

  • Southern atolls: 3-13 mph

  • Other regions: 10-20 mph

  • Thunderstorm gusts: up to 36 mph

Sea conditions will also deteriorate. Seas are expected to be moderate in the southern atolls, moderately rough elsewhere, and strong during periods of heavy rain and gusty winds.

The Met Office has advised seafarers and travellers to exercise caution as adverse weather is expected to persist through the night.
