Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been selected as the interim leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The decision was made during a national council meeting in AA. Ukulhas on Tuesday night.
MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail confirmed the decision.
Solih was not present at the meeting.
Solih had lost his position as the supreme leader of MDP after his presidential term expired last Friday. The position is reserved solely for incumbent Maldivian presidents from the party.
The two-day national council meeting comes with two top posts at the party vacant; that of the party’s leader and deputy leader.
The party’s former leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and former deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz had both left the MDP following internal conflict within the party earlier this year.
They are both now members of a new party – the Democrats.
MDP last held a national council meeting on October 3, at the heels of his defeat in the presidential elections.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the party discussed its future political plans.
