Jumhoory Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim’s Special Envoy Ilham Ahmed has pledged support for the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the runoff of the presidential election.
Ilham, in a tweet on Thursday, said the necessity for cruelty and revenge has been witnessed in the past. He detailed that he made the decision to support President Solih after consulting with political figures and other individuals with consideration to the outcome if individuals presently vowing to carry out revengeful acts come to power.
“As I believe the incumbent, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is the most capable individual that can be elected as the president of the Maldives as of present – and therefore, I have pledged my support to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih,” he said.
Ilham said President Solih’s current term has proved that the nation can be led in peacefully, without unrest.
“He has proven that the nation can be led by allowing political opponents to carry out political opponents,” he added.
“By will of Almighty, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will win this presidential election,” he stressed.
JP’s leader Qasim’s advisor Riyaz Rasheed and the party’s council members Mohamed Saeed and Mohamed Fayaz have also pledged support to President Solih.
The presidential election headed to a runoff after none of the candidates who contested the election managed to win outright.
MDP’s candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih secured 39 percent of the votes in the first round of the presidential elections held on September 9th – placing second. The greatest number of votes was opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with 46 percent of the votes.
