Police probe Thulhaadhoo voter for carrying spy pen

The pen that was used to take a photograph of the ballot at B. Thulhaadhoo during the 2023 Presidential elections.

Elections Commission (EC) has revealed that there has been a case of a voter taking a picture with a pen in B. Thulhaadhoo.

Speaking at a press conference held today by EC, the Vice Chairman of EC, Ismail Habeeb, said that a case of a voter taking a picture with a pen at the polls has been reported to the police and is will be investigated.

“Even if they took a photo, the ballot is valid and can be put into the box, but the act by the voter is a crime and we will investigate this issue through the police,” he said.

He further said that while voting was suspended following this incident, voting was resumed after a while.

Habeeb also said that if any other incidents of photographing or videotaping of ballots are noticed, those incidents will be investigated as well and that after the investigation is concluded the incident will be reported to the PG office so that any legal steps that have to be taken can be taken.

While 282395 people have the right to vote, as per the latest data released by EC, 47 percent of those people have already cast their vote.
