The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has received membership forms of 2,500 new members.
The forms from 12 of the party’s branches were presented to MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail in a ceremony at the MDP headquarters in Male’ on Wednesday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Fayyaz said MDP will continue to work towards its growth.
He said the 2,500 new membership forms were collected as part of recent efforts across the country to drive up the party’s membership.
The forms include those collected by the party during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s recent visit to Addu City.
The main ruling party is the biggest political party in Maldives. According to the Elections Commission, the party has 57,660 members as of February 21.
MDP’s efforts to drive up membership comes after a faction loyal to the party’s leader Mohamed Nasheed broke from the party to form a new political party – The Democrats.
The party applied for registration with 3,560 membership forms last week.
