Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group leader Mohamed Aslam said Tuesday that there was only so much the party can tolerate of the actions of its leader and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, and that he has lost the faith and respect of the party’s members.

The MDP parliamentary group decided to submit a no-confidence motion against Nasheed to oust him as Parliament Speaker earlier Tuesday, less than a day after it said that while it was concerned about his actions, the parliamentary group wanted to resolve the issue through discussion because of his position as the party’s leader and the respect he holds.

Speaking to press Tuesday, Aslam said everyone believed Nasheed to be someone who upholds the principles of democracy, and someone who would work on reforms.

Aslam accused Nasheed of pushing his personal agendas instead.

“Especially as we work as members of the Parliament, it is important that things are carried out in accordance with the set rules, regulations and protocols. But we see this shatter to pieces. We see the Parliament losing its power and dignity,” he said.

Aslam said that they had been more than patient.

41 MPs had taken part in the vote to submit a no-confidence motion against Nasheed. All, except for five, voted in favor of the motion.

MDP has also submitted a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.
