Sri Lankan vessel illegally fishing in Maldivian waters captured by coastguard

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has captured a Sri Lankan vessel found fishing illegally in the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

‘Sathasarani 06’ was captured 109 nautical miles northeast of Vaavu Atoll on Thursday.

The vessel has now been transported to Male’ by the Coast Guard.

Another foreign vessel found fishing illegally in the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone was captured by the Coastguard on Wednesday. However, the MNDF has not disclosed details regarding the case, including the nationality of the boat.

Many vessels have been caught by the Coast Guard while illegally fishing in Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone previously as well.

Such boats are usually fined by the government, and greenlighted to leave only when the fine is settled.
