MDP candidate wins Vaikaradhoo council by-elections

MDP’s candidate Fathimath Shizna who won HDh. Vaikaradhoo Council by-election.

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate has been declared the winner in the by-election held to elect a candidate for the vacant post of female councilor in HDh. Vaikaradhoo Council.

MDP’s candidate Fathimath Shizna won the by-election held on Saturday with 283 votes in total. Meanwhile, her opponent, Adhaalath Party’s candidate Fathimath Nazla, secured 258 votes.

The by-election was called for after MDP councilor who previously held the seat rendered her resignation.

Vaikaradhoo Women’s Development Committees (WDC) by-election was also held on Saturday. Adhaalth Party's candidate, Fathimath Zunaina, won the vacant seat in the WDC with 376 votes. MDP candidate, Ramziyaa Ibrahim, who lost, only secured 167 votes.

Vaikaradhoo residents are mostly politically affiliated with MDP and Adhaalath Party. Therewith, most elections held for the constituency has been a contest between both parties.

The island’s council presently comprises of four MDP councilors and one Adhlaath Party councilor.
