Three arrested in clashes during MDP primary released from custody

Three of the five suspects arrested in disturbances at polling stations during the MDP primary Saturday have been released from police custody.

Disturbances took place in several polling stations in Male’ City and other islands as MDP members voted to elect their presidential candidate.

Two men were arrested from GDh. Rathafandhoo and one from GDh. Thinadhoo for damaging ballot boxes. Two more men were arrested from the polling station in Iskandhar School in Male’ for attempting to damage the ballot papers for Hinnavaru constituency.

A police spokesperson told Sun on Sunday that three of the five suspects arrested Saturday have been released from police custody. He did not disclose any details.

The MDP primary had continued despite the disturbances. Interim results place President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the winner by a landslide.
