President Solih: Satisfied with the results; intention is moving forward with the party

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Saturday night, stated he is satisfied with the results of the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential election which took place earlier in the day.

He made the remark responding to questions by the press as he met with supporters in a campaign hall after winning the election.

“I will move forward with the party. That is my thinking,” President Solih responded to a question posed by Sun.

The President further stated that he was extremely satisfied with the number of votes received during this primary.

He won the election with a vast number of more votes than his opponent candidate, MDP’s leader Mohamed Nasheed.

While over half of the votes have been counted so far – President Solih is leading with 18,810 votes amounting to 63 percent. His opponent candidate, MDP’s leader Mohamed Nasheed only received 11,173 votes which amount to 37 percent.

The primary which took place had 57,255 eligible voters from which approximately 30,000 people cast their votes.

The voting which began at 9:00am, concluded at 5:00pm. Disturbances were reported from multiple polling stations in Male’ area and in atolls.
