MDP primary: President Solih confident of ‘double digit’ victory

President Ibrahim Mohamed states he is certain of he will win the race to win the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential ticket with a 'double digit' difference.

President Solih, who is competing against MDP’s leader and Parliament speaker, former president Mohamed Nasheed to the ticket, made the comment while speaking to reporters after casting his ballot Saturday morning.

Speaking to press, President Solih said he is confident the election will proceed peacefully.

I don’t believe any attempt to rig the election will happen, he said.

President Solih appealed to MDP members to conduct election-related affairs in a “democratic spirit”.

He said he was hopeful all MDP members will be able to unite after the election.

The next focus after the primary is to win the presidential election, he said.

Polling began at 09:00 am in all polling stations expect for a few. Polls are set to close at 05:00 pm.

More than 57,000 MDP members are eligible to vote in the election.
