Maldives to hold 2023 presidential election on September 9

Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the presidential election 2023 will be held on September 9.

The election date was announced during a press conference Sunday morning.

Speaking at the press conference, EC’s chairman Fuad Thaufeeq added that a second round, if necessary, will be held on September 30.

EC estimates that over 280,000 people will be eligible to vote in the election – 21,000 voters more than the 2018 presidential election.

The voters’ list will be released on May 2.

Presidential hopefuls will be able to submit their candidacy forms from July 23-September 3, and will get the opportunity to officially begin their campaign on August 10.

Campaigns will close on September 8.

According to EC, it will install 145 ballot boxes in Male’, 47 in Hulhumale’, 10 in Vilimale’, 237 in the atolls, and 12 overseas.
