Police: Most accident occur due to carelessness

Many of the accidents that occur in Male’ are due to the carelessness of those driving the vehicles, stated Maldives Police Service.

Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday, Superintendent of Police Hussain Sameer said that many incidents happened for failing to pay attention to the road, and ultimately losing control.

He went on to note that a part of Police work in the Male’ City was identifying those who drive recklessly in a manner that creates fear among people and bringing those under control.

“Under this, over 40 vehicles have been seized by Police. That means each of those vehicles was seized for a period of 30 days.”

Furthermore, he stated that it has come to their attention that those driving recklessly are mostly individuals without a driver’s license.

“We want to highlight that there are many that drive without a license. Police have seized 1,034 vehicles due to this.”

Sameer further said that the number of accidents can be decreased if those using the roads are more vigilant. He also reminded every of their civic responsibility and advised them to act accordingly.  

In addition to this, Police stated the number of accidents has increased due to changes in weather as well, adding that in the past week with rainy weather, numerous incidents took place.

 It was on Monday, July 4, when a private car lost control and crashed into an MTCC bus that was driving by, injuring six.

Unfortunately, soon after the crash one of the females lost her life while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Pictures and video footage from the scene show that both vehicles were in bad shape, with the car being completely smashed due to the impact. 

Police stated that further investigations were regarding this.
