Yoga Day Violence: Sheikh Nishan 7 days, Ex-Mp Mohamed Ismail 5 days

Al-Sheikh Fazloon bin Mohamed and Al-Sheikh Nishan Adam bin Ali Adam. Both are arrested in connection to the attack at the event held to mark World Yoga Day.

The Criminal Court has extended remand periods for Al-Sheikh Nishan Adam bin Ali Adam and former Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail – arrested in connection to the mob that attacked the event held at the national football stadium on June 21, to mark World Yoga Day.

Both were presented to the court on Thursday in order to make a decision regarding their remand period.

The Criminal Court ordered to extend Sheikh Nishan’s detention for seven days, while for Mohamed Ismail, it was extended for five days.  

Additionally, Police has also arrested Al-Sheikh Fazloon bin Mohamed. A decision has not been made on his remand period as of now.

The event, organized by the Indian Cultural Center and the Sports Ministry, had begun at 06:30 am on Tuesday, and was attended by dozens of participants, including foreign ambassadors and diplomats.

A mob of angry protestors stormed the stadium, threatened and assaulted some of the participants, and destroyed property.

The attack is under investigation by the Serious and Organized Department.

Police said in an earlier statement the case was being investigated as a serious matter, and that preliminary investigative findings established that some of the items used by the mob had come from the office of PPM.
