The leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group, North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam, has publicly announced his support for Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail for the position of MDP’s chairperson.
The main ruling party is scheduled to elect a chairperson and leaders to its Women’s Wing and Youth Wing on April 16.
The most highly contested seat in the upcoming MDP elections is that of the party’s chairperson. The seat is being contested by Fayyaz and North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi).
Some believe the election is also a competition between President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP leader and Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed. Fayyaz is believed to be backed by the President, while Inthi is believed to be backed by Nasheed.
Announcing his support for Fayyaz, Aslam tweeted on Thursday afternoon that believed Fayyaz would lead MDP to greater success and strength.
“Hon. Fayaz has proven to be a strong leader with exceptional political acumen, unwavering resolve, and commitment to his values,” he said.
