North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam has announced candidacy for the position of parliamentary group leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Aslam told Sun on Sunday evening that he made the decision to improve the work of the MDP parliamentary group.

Aslam is the longest-serving parliamentarian among current MDP parliamentarians. He was first elected to the Parliament in 2005, and has been successfully re-elected each election since.

Aslam had been elected MDP parliamentary group leader in November 2018, and had served as parliamentary group leader until the 2019 parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, MDP’s current parliamentary group leader, Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim has yet to announce whether he planned on running for re-election.

MDP’s parliamentary group election is scheduled for February 28. Aslam is the first to announce his candidacy. The party will also elect the deputy parliamentary group leader, secretary-general, deputy secretary-general, and six chief whips.
