Maldives National Party (MNP)’s deputy leader for central region, Abdulla Riyaz said on Monday that the party is leading the campaign for the Komandoo by-elections, and that it must be reflected in the results of the elections.

MNP’s candidate for the vacant Komandoo parliamentary seat is Abdul Hannan Idrees, who announced his electoral pledges in a ceremony on Monday evening.

Speaking at the event, Riyaz, the parliamentary representative for Thimarafushi, said that MNP’s rivals claim the people should vote for them because they are led by a specific political figure or because they call for a specific party to be ‘outed’.

He said that it holds no basis to ask for votes.

Riyaz said MNP is asking for votes to fulfill the needs of the people.

“That’s not how the Maldivian political arena is. That’s not what the Maldivian people want. The people want to know what will change for them, what the vision is, how their lives will change, and which candidate they should trust,” he said.

Riyaz said MNP’s pledges are what the people want.

He also said that MNP was leading the campaign, and that it must be reflected in the election results.

“We are leading the campaign race so far. We are leading the campaign, we are leading in meeting the people, and we are leading in everything. We should also be number 1 when the results are read on election day,” he said.

Riyaz said the people want a well-mannered politician as their representative, and that Hannan will be someone who speaks politely, instead of creating a scene at the Parliament. He said that Hannan would make the people of Komandoo constituency proud.
