Police: Mutiple cases of fake bookings under investigation

Maldives Police Service has stated that they are probing into cases in relation to tourists being scammed into coming to the Maldives under fake hotel bookings.

A media official from the Police had told Sun that multiple cases of tourists being brought to the Maldives under fake bookings have been reported to them – whereas they are currently investigating the matter.

“Multiple cases of fake bookings have been filed. The investigation is ongoing. We can only disclose additional information as the investigation proceeds,” the media official had said.

Multiple cases of tourists being scammed into coming to the Maldives under fake hotel bookings have come to light recently.

On last week’s Sunday, 27 tourists fell victim to a hotel booking scam and were left stranded in Male’ City. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the relevant authorities.

The Police had made several arrests in connection to the case on the night itself.

Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Ahmed Hussain (Hanafy) has previously revealed the decision by the Maldives Immigration Services to make systemic and policy changes in order to counter the issue of tourists being scammed into coming to the Maldives under fake hotel bookings.

In addition to this, the Police have begun a special inspection of tourist establishments in connection to fake bookings.
