Maldives Media Council (MMC) has cautioned local media outlets over publishing news that directly affect the integrity of foreign ambassadors and diplomats appointed to the Maldives.

MMC’s has made this statement days after the High Commission of India in the Maldives had requested the Foreign Ministry to take action against local media outlets regarding rhetoric that negatively affected the integrity of the mission and its officials.

In a statement released today, MMC noted that various concerned parties have brought to their attention that local media outlets have been publishing news that is disrespectful and directly affect the dignity of foreign ambassadors and diplomats appointed to the Maldives.

They then went on to establish their stand on the matter – stating that MMC believes that media outlets should not report untrue facts regarding diplomatic ties made between Maldives and other nations. Furthermore, they note that it is absolutely unacceptable for media outlets to report news that may threaten the security of diplomatic missions and diplomats established stationed in the Maldives.

MMC added that such action would strain the long-standing diplomatic relations established between the Maldives and other countries and create hostility amongst local people towards friendly nations – ultimately adversely affecting the country as a whole.

Therewith, MMC requests media outlets to report responsibly in exercising their freedom of press and while strictly adhering to MMC’s laws, regulations, and Code of Ethics.

In addition to this, MMC calls on the media to respect the terms of international conventions that the Maldives is a party to and advises prioritizing national interest when practicing journalism.

Prior to this, the Foreign Ministry has also advised local media outlets on publishing news that could strain long-standing diplomatic relations formed between the Maldives and other nations.

It has also been rumored that the High Commission of India has put in a request to investigate media outlet ‘Dhiyares’ to MMC through MP of Meedhoo Constituency and Chairperson of Committee on Independent Institutions, Rozaina Adam.
