President congratulates mayor-elects of 4 Maldivian cities

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called the candidates who won the race for mayoral seats in the four Maldivian cities in the Local Council Elections on Saturday and congratulated them on their victory.

The race for Male’ City mayor was won by opposition PPM candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, while the race for Addu City mayor was won by ruling MDP candidate Ali Nizar and the race for Fuvahmulah City mayor was won by MDP candidate Ismail Rafeeq (Issey).

Meanwhile, MDP candidate Mohamed Athif has been elected the first mayor of Kulhudhuffushi - designated a city by the President last year.

President’s spokesperson Mabrook Azeez said the President called all four mayor-elects and congratulated them on their election victory on Saturday night.

“And he provided assurance of his full cooperation for conducting development projects under the decentralized system of governance,” said Mabrook.

MDP leader and Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has also congratulated Male’ City mayor-elect Muizzu and assured him of his cooperation.

Nasheed said that he hopes Muizzu will work hard to solve the issues facing the capital.

“You will receive the cooperation you require from me,” he said.
