Three residents from M. Kolhufushi, who returned to the island after a recent trip to L. Gan, have tested positive for COVID-19.
Gan Council vice president Ahmed Shaheen told Sun on Friday evening that the three people arrived in Gan around January 20, and stayed for approximately four days before returning to Kolhufushi.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) imposed travel restrictions on Kolhufushi following confirmation of a COVID-19 case on January 24.
“They returned from Gan to Kolhufushi the day the island was placed under monitoring. The island wasn’t under monitoring when they left, but shortly after they arrived,” said Shaheen.
They were tested on Friday.
Shaheen said that the council has received information the three travellers had been symptomatic during their time in Gan.
He said that health authorities are conducting contact tracing in Gan in connection to the cases, but that the island is not under monitoring.
Maldives has confirmed 15,614 COVID-19 cases, including 118 new cases on Friday. The new cases on Friday include 21 cases from residential islands outside Male’ region.
