Youth Ministry closed after employee tests positive for COVID-19

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has been closed after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.

Sources have confirmed that the Ministry was informed of the positive employee and the Ministry, which is run in Veleenaage, is now closed for disinfection procedures. The Velaanaage office complex houses a number of government offices. 

The Ministry will be reopened as soon as disinfection is completed. 

The number of COVID-19 cases originating from workplaces has been on the rise recently.

The Maldives currently has 2,354 active cases. With the 66 new infections confirmed yesterday, 777 people have tested positive over the last one-week period.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Maldives is at 5,223. There are 1,507 patients in isolation facilities and a further 148 in hospitals receiving treatment for the virus. 90,704 samples, including repeated samples, have been taken by health authorities to conduct tests.
