Remand hearings in Maldives to be conducted via video conference

Maldives Police Service has announced that remand hearings for inmates would be conducted from now on via video conference as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19 in the Maldives.

The hearings will be conducted via video conferencing between Dhoonidhoo custodial and the Criminal Court and Police officials stated that the necessary preparations for the work were now completed.

Arrangements for attorneys to attend these hearings via video conferences have also been made.

The first such hearing via video conference, where prosecutors attended a hearing, was conducted last week.

The Maldives has implemented stringent measures against the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the country. As part of these measures, government offices have been closed for a week and schools, colleges and universities in the country have also been closed.

The government has also discouraged people from gathering in locations and also advised courts to conduct work based on the situation.
