The government of Maldives has decided to cut 20 percent from the salaries of all political appointees.

The move was decided in a cabinet meeting today due to the negative impact of the Covid-19 disease on the local economy. The situation with the virus is expected to cost the government MVR 6.9 billion in revenue.

The state budget passed by the parliament for this year states that the salaries of political employees will set the state back by MVR 331.72 million. This is an average of 27.5 million per month.

The cut in salaries will save the government MVR 55 million this year.
