‘Sun’ is able to confirm through reliable sources former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is being kept in the same cell at the Special Protection Unit of Maafushi Prison which once housed his half-brother, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Maumoon was arrested for conspiracy to overthrow Yameen’s administration on February 6, 2018. He was kept detained at both Maafushi Prison and Dhoonidhoo Custodial.
Yameen is embroiled in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement scam, and was ordered to jail pending the outcome of his money laundering trial by Criminal Court on February 11.
Media officer at Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugman reports Yameen is being kept detained out of the general population at the Special Protection Unit of Maafushi Prison.
‘Sun’ is able to confirm through reliable sources the cell which houses Yameen is the same cell which once housed his half-brother Maumoon.
The Special Protection Unit, established for detention of high-profile figures, has additional amenities including a mattress bed, refrigerator, air conditioning and an attached toilet which is regularly cleaned and maintained.
Current occupants of the Special Protection Unit, in addition to Yameen, includes former Maldivian Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor.
Maumoon, during his time in jail, took a turn for the worse. And Yameen’s administration was criticized for failing to provide him with adequate medical care at the time.
