Some MDP politicians arrested under State of Emergency freed

Some of the individuals arrested under the State of Emergency have been released from detention.

The State of Emergency is due to end by the end of Thursday.

Some of the individuals released include members of the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s national council.

Those released include the deputy leader of MDP, Mohamed Shifaz. Shifaz was arrested in February for alleged complicity in an attempt to overthrow President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

Former Hulhumeedhoo MP Ilyaas Labeed; and Ahmed Shahid (Saabe), and MNDP national council members Hassan Ahmed and Hussain Ilham – arrested under the State of Emergency for alleged conspiracy to disturb the peace in Male’ City.

LeCute shareholder – Abdul Majid (LeCute Majid) who worked as MDP’s campaign manager during the last Local Council Elections – has also been released.

A large number of other individuals arrested under the State of Emergency have now also been released.
