2 SPG officers released from custody

Two Special Protection Group (SPG) officers arrested under declaration of State of Emergency have been released from detention.

“Sun” has been informed the two SPG officers were released from the custody of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) last Sunday. The reason they were released from custody is unclear at this point.

A State of Emergency was declared in Maldives for a period of 15 days on February 5, the period was extended 30 more days on February 20.

A number of police and military officers have been arrested during the period, some for suspected complicity in an attempt to overthrow President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

Authorities have confirmed the arrests of some police officers, but have not confirmed the arrests of any military officers.
