Former South Maafannu councillor Mohamed Aiman Ismail, widely known as Aanu, has been remanded in custody for 30 days as police continue investigating allegations that he sexually assaulted a child.
Aiman was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the case.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Shiyam told Sun on Sunday that a court had ordered Aiman to remain in custody for a further 30 days.
Shiyam said the police investigation is nearly complete and that officers are now working with the Prosecutor General’s Office to prepare the case for prosecution.
He added that further investigative work remains ongoing.
Aiman served as a councillor after being elected to represent South Maafannu in the 2014 local council elections.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former MDP president Abdulla Shahid was also recently remanded in custody for 30 days in a separate case involving allegations of sexually assaulting a child. Shahid has appealed the remand order at the High Court.
