Man jailed for 15 years for child sexual abuse

A man has been convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing a child under the Special Procedures Against Child Sexual Offenders Act.

Abdul Nafiu Easa was convicted under Article 9(a) of the Act, and the Criminal Court imposed a 15-year imprisonment sentence under subsection 9(b).

Further details of the case have not been disclosed in order to protect the identity and safety of the child victim, as child sexual abuse cases require strict confidentiality.

Maldivian courts have recently been issuing severe penalties for child sexual abuse and related offences. In a separate conviction, an offender was sentenced to 16 years in jail under the same Act for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl. In another case, a man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for sexually abusing a child. Additionally, another offender received a 10-year sentence for intentionally touching a child’s body with sexual intent.
