The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has conducted a series of food-safety awareness programmes aimed at improving standards among local food manufacturers. The first session, a basic food-safety training programme, was held in L. Gan, where the 2026 programme took place on August 28 and 29. MFDA said 29 women completed the training.

Following the session in Gan, MFDA conducted its Ufakaara programme in Male', concluding last Thursday. According to MFDA, 34 participants completed the Male' training, which focused on safe food-handling practices, hygiene requirements, and regulatory compliance for small-scale and commercial producers.

The programmes come at a time when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the need to strengthen food-safety regulations and increase technical capacity for monitoring and testing. He has also urged consumers to seek reliable information on food safety and adopt safe practices at home.

Food-safety lapses continue to surface occasionally in the Maldives, including cases of food being prepared or sold in unhygienic environments. MFDA has increased its presence in consumer markets, but officials acknowledge that significant work remains, especially in a country with limited local production, heavy reliance on imports, widespread GMO products, and high costs for organic, sustainable alternatives.
