Gadhdhoo man receives life sentence over heroin found on farm

A man from the island of Gadhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll has received the life sentence for trafficking diamorphine or heroin.

According to the police, Ali Shazeen, 37, Nooreege, GDh. Gadhdhoo, was convicted of trafficking under Article 105 of the Drugs Act by the Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court on Sunday.

Shazeen was arrested following a police raid on Gan, a large uninhabited island that lies close to Gadhdhoo.

According to the police, the raid on farmland where Shazeen worked led to the seizure of drugs and alcohol.

Shazeen was charged with drug trafficking and engaging in a regulated activity without authorization.

He was found guilty of both charges and was sentenced him to a life term of 25 years in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 100,000.

The case in question was reported to the police on August 10, 2021. The police finished the investigation and forwarded it to the Prosecutor General’s Office for charges on September 1, 2021.
