The state-owned fish company MIFCO has recorded a decline in purchased fish and payments to fishermen in September compared to August.
According to statistics released by MIFCO, 451 fishing vessels landed 1,288.42 tonnes of fish in September last year. This includes 1,284.1 tonnes of skipjack tuna, 0.5 tonnes of yellowfin tuna above 10 kg, and 3.8 tonnes of yellowfin tuna above 15 kg. MIFCO paid MVR 27.32 million to fishermen during the month.
In comparison, 535 vessels landed 1,488.30 tonnes of fish in August last year. Payments to fishermen in August were higher, making September’s payout MVR 2.67 million less.

It is noteworthy that MIFCO increased the purchase price of skipjack tuna to MVR 21 per kg at the end of August. By the end of September, the price rose again to MVR 22 per kg. Prices for yellowfin tuna remained unchanged at MVR 20 per kg for fish between 10-15 kg and MVR 25 per kg for fish above 15 kg.
According to MIFCO’s statistics so far this year, the highest volume of fish purchased was in April, with 4,414 tonnes landed and MVR 78.78 million paid to fishermen. The lowest fishing this year was recorded in June, with 568 tonnes purchased and MVR 11.33 million released to fishermen.
