The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has raised its purchase price for skipjack tuna to MVR 23 per kilogram, effective today, to mark the company’s 33rd anniversary.

According to MIFCO, skipjack tuna is now being purchased at MVR 23 per kilogram, while yellowfin tuna weighing between 10kg and 15kg is priced at MVR 20 per kilogram. Yellowfin tuna weighing more than 15kg is being purchased at MVR 25 per kilogram.

Today, MIFCO is accepting fish through its facilities in Felivaru, Kooddoo and Addu, as well as at the harbours of GDh. Thinadhoo, M. Mulah, H.A. Ihavandhoo and Th. Hirilandhoo.

MIFCO has gradually increased its purchase price for skipjack tuna over recent months. On June 7, the rate was raised from MVR 17 to MVR 18.50 per kilogram, followed by a further increase to MVR 20 on June 9. The price was subsequently raised to MVR 21 on August 29, MVR 22 on September 22 and MVR 22.75 on October 19. The latest adjustment brings the price to MVR 23 per kilogram as part of the company’s anniversary celebrations.

MIFCO emphasised that expanding cold storage and processing capacity is essential to sustaining favourable fish prices. The company said shifting from raw fish exports to higher-value processed products is key to maintaining greater control over prices and ensuring increased economic returns for the Maldives. The government’s broader strategy for the fisheries sector is aligned with this objective.

Marking its anniversary, MIFCO reiterated its commitment to ensuring fair prices for fishers and continuously improving the quality of its services. The company also noted that significant reforms are underway to strengthen its position as a trusted partner of the fishing community.

Established in 1993, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) is the main state-owned enterprise operating in the Maldivian fisheries sector. Its core activities include purchasing fish from local fishers, processing and exporting frozen and canned tuna products to international markets, and supplying the domestic market.
