Islamic Minister unveils proposed official attire for imams and khatibs, seeks public feedback

The temporary design of the official robe to be worn by imams and Khatibs when leading prayers and delivering sermons has been unveiled by the Islamic Minister.

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed shared AI-generated images of the proposed robe and cap on social media, noting that the design draws inspiration from the minaret of Male' Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy), traditional Maldivian patterns, and the stone-carving motifs historically used in Maldivian architecture.

Minister Shaheem said the attire is currently in its first phase, and the final design will be completed after incorporating public feedback.

He said the clothing concept is rooted in Maldives’ history, culture, ancient mosques, and elements of Islamic civilization, and that the purpose of introducing a formal robe is to preserve and promote Maldivian identity within religious practice.

The government aims to finalize the robe before the upcoming Ramadan.

More than 700 young Khatibs have been trained so far under the government’s efforts to build a new generation of religious leaders.

Minister Shaheem also highlighted that the Maldives currently has the largest number of Hafiz in its history, with 322 Hafiz recorded. The government’s goal is to increase the number to 500 during this term.
