The power went out on Wednesday afternoon, in parts of Male’ City and Hulhumale’.

State Electric Company (STELCO) attributed the outage to a “technical issue”, but did not elaborate.

“We are working on identifying the issue and resolving it. We apologize for the inconvenience,” added the company in an announcement via its social media handles.

The power went out around 02:00 pm Wednesday. Several netizens have taken to social media to complain that parts of Henveiru and Maafannu districts of Male’, along with parts of Hulhumale’ Phase I were affected by the outage.

The Maldivian capital, home to some 200,000 people, has been affected by frequent power outages in recent years. Many of the recent outages have been mostly attributed to damage to cables, with STELCO working quickly to fix the issues and restore power.

However, a total blackout in the capital on June 1, 2025 left tens of thousands of people who live there without power for nearly six hours.

STELCO has stated that it was working on boosting electricity supply to meet the growing demand in the populous capital.
